The final countdown

The end of the tax year on the 5 April has a habit of sneaking up on you! The good news is that a little bit of planning now might be able to save you money.

Here are the key things to think about:

Use your ISA allowance: you can save or invest up to £20,000 tax-free this year, but it doesn’t roll over so use it or lose it! Children can have up to £9,000 in a Junior ISA too.

Top up your pension: one of the best ways to reduce your tax bill. You can even carry forward unused allowance from the last three years.

Review your investments: everyone has an annual Capital Gains Tax exemption. If you have investments that have grown in value, it may be worth using your exemption before the deadline. Sitting on some losses? Selling those can help offset gains elsewhere.

Donate to charity via Gift Aid: if you’re a higher-rate taxpayer and you’re not claiming Gift Aid relief, you could be leaving money on the table.

Check your dividend allowance: At £500, this is well worth keeping on your radar. If you’re a business owner taking salary and dividends, now is a good time to review your position.

Get your self-assessment records together: the earlier you start pulling things together, the less stressful it all becomes!
