After years of delays, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) is finally happening. If you’re a sole trader or landlord, it’s time to sit up and take notice.
So, what’s changing?
Instead of one annual self-assessment return every January, you’ll need to:
- Keep digital records of income and expenses throughout the year
- Send quarterly updates to HMRC
- Submit a final year-end declaration
It’s being rolled out gradually, based on your gross income from self-employment and/or property. If this income is over £50,000, you’ll need to be ready by 6 April 2026. This threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027, and HMRC plans to drop it again in April 2028 to £20,000.
Not sure where you fall? We can help you work that out.
The quarterly submissions are just summaries, so they don’t need to be perfect sets of accounts, but your records do need to be kept digitally throughout the year and you’ll need HMRC-compatible software to submit the quarterly updates.
Don’t leave it too late!
So, there you have it! Making Tax Digital is no longer something you can kick down the road – the deadline is almost here, and the time to act is now. But honestly? Once you’ve got the right software in place and your processes sorted, it’s not nearly as daunting as it first seems.
If you haven’t made the switch yet, don’t panic, but do get moving. The clock is ticking, so don’t wait. Give us a call or send us a message today and let’s get you sorted before the deadline arrives.
