There’s been an update! Companies House has confirmed that new legal requirements for identity verification will come into effect from 18 November 2025 – and the good news is that the process has been designed to be as straightforward as possible and will be a one-time requirement for most people.

Here’s what you need to know

  • New directors will need to verify their identity before they can incorporate a company or be appointed to an existing company. This verification will be completed as part of the appointment process.
  • Existing directors have a 12-month transition period to complete their identity verification. This can be done as a precursor to the annual confirmation statement process.
  • People with significant control (PSCs) will need to verify their identity within 12 months, with specific appointed dates to be communicated by Companies House.

What happens next?

  1. Verify your identity and receive your Companies House personal code. This code is unique to you and should be kept secure. You can verify your identify yourself through your gov.uk One Login, or we can do it for you!
  2. From 18 November, you will need to link your verified identity to each company role you hold by providing your personal code and a verification statement for each role.
