The way companies file their annual accounts is about to change – and the clock is already ticking. From 1 April 2027, Companies House will require all annual accounts to be filed using commercial software. That’s right – paper and web-based filings are being phased out for good.
At Frost Wiltshire, we’re here to help you prepare for what may be the most significant shake-up to company filing in decades.
What’s happening and why it matters
This change is part of the government’s broader reforms under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, aimed at increasing transparency, improving the quality of information on the public register, and reducing fraud.
Here’s what you need to know:
- From 1 April 2027, all annual accounts must be filed digitally using software – no more paper or web portal options.
- Profit and loss accounts will be mandatory for small and micro-entity companies.
- Additional updates to audit exemptions and accounting reference periods are expected in the months ahead.
Companies House will still allow you to file other documents, like confirmation statements and director updates, through its online services – but account filings are going fully digital.
Why this change is a good thing (yes, really!)
While any regulatory change can feel like a headache, this one brings real benefits:
- Fewer errors and faster processing times – goodbye to rejected filings due to formatting issues.
- More secure submissions – no need to worry about documents going missing in the post.
- Better data for lenders and partners – your profit and loss information will support credit decisions and build trust.
- Stronger fraud prevention – with standardised, digital filing, Companies House will have a clearer picture of who’s doing what.
What you need to do – and how we can help
You’ve got 21 months – that’s one full accounting year plus nine months – to make the switch. If you’re already filing with commercial software, you’re good to go. But if you’re still using web or paper methods, it’s time to start planning.
That’s where we come in.
At Frost Wiltshire, we work with HMRC-approved software platforms, and we’ve already helped many of clients migrate to digital filing. Whether you’re a small startup or a growing SME, we can help you.
While April 2027 may sound far away, the earlier you act, the smoother your transition will be. Give yourself peace of mind – and avoid any last-minute panic.
